Jack no longer had an appetite.

Now, mad at Nina for not reminding him about tonight’s dinner, he jumped up from his desk chair and threw his glass of bourbon across the room. Amber liquid and shards of Baccarat crystal exploded everywhere. How the hell am I going to get through this dinner?

CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE

March

Kelly and Owen were already seated in the back of Basil’s on Main when Nina and Jack walked in. Kelly raised her hand and waved them over.

“Be nice,” Nina whispered through her smile.

“I always am,” Jack replied. Nina gave him a side eye.

“Hi, you two! Happy Anniversary!” Nina squealed. Kelly stood up and the two hugged.

“Owen, happy anniversary,” Jack said, shaking Owen’s hand.

“Thanks, man. Appreciate that. Sit, sit.”

The waiter come to the table and introduced himself. He asked for drink orders.

“I’ll take a Carlsberg and she’ll have a glass of Riesling,” Jack said.

‘With a glass of ice on the side, please,” Nina added.

“You and your ice with wine,” Kelly said. ‘Crazy.”

“I’ll have the same as him,” Owen said, “and - ”

“Just a sparkling water, please,” Kelly said.

“What?!” Nina acted surprised. “No Champagne? No tequila shot? Talk about crazy! What’s wrong with you? Pregnant?” Nina laughed.

Kelly looked at Nina and just smiled. Nina’s eyes widened.

“What?!” Nina said, genuinely surprised this time. “You’re…you’re pregnant?!”

“I am! We are!” Kelly responded. “We wanted to wait and tell everyone until the first trimester was over, just to be safe.”

“Twelve weeks? You went twelve weeks without telling me? Your best friend? What the hell?!” Nina said playfully, sort of.

“Sixteen, actually. But we just wanted to be sure, you know? I mean, especially with you, we wanted to be - ”

“Sensitive,” Owen interjected. “We didn’t want to stir up any old emotions, that’s all.”

Nina knew exactly what they were talking about. It was such a difficult time in her and Jack’s lives when they were trying to conceive. So many failed attempts and miscarriages and disappointments after elations. It was horrible. But they had Addy in their lives now and they were blessed with a full-term pregnancy with Noah. So, everything worked itself out in the end.

“We understand,” Jack said. “And congrats. You two are going to be terrific parents.” He looked at Kelly and she did not return his stare.

“Awww, thanks, pal,” Owen said. “If we’re half the parents you guys are then I’ll call that a success.”

The waiter came and took their dinner orders. Jack went first and then Owen. The girls were being indecisive, per usual. Jack’s phone beeped. A text. He read it and his face flushed with heat. He looked at Owen. Jack looked down at his phone and read the text again.

O: Meet me in the bathroom. We need to talk.

What the hell Owen? Now’s not the time, Jack thought. He looked at Owen covertly and shook his head imperceptibly ‘no’.

Owen’s look back was one of disappointment. But he could wait.

“Well,” Nina said, “you guys are going to make wonderful first-time parents.” She caught Kelly and Owen quickly glancing at each other.
